Why short guided tours or activities are a great idea -home or away!

With Lockdown relaxing in the UK, many of us will be wanting to plan our next vacation- I certainly am!

If you do not yet feel comfortable travelling abroad or if money if an issue, you could look at planning a short staycation, or even a few day trips, in your home country.

Unless you just like to spend the whole of your vacation lying on the beach, or by a pool, you might enjoy the benefits of a guided tour or activity. Don’t get me wrong, I love to spend some time chilling by the sea or pool, with a nice book, but I also love to spend some time exploring the area I’m in, socialising with other tourists or locals and trying some new experiences whilst I’m there.

Whether you’re into history & culture, food & drink, nature & adventure , sporting activities, film & music or sightseeing, a guided tour is a great option. You will be shown around by an expert who will give you an idea of the history of the place you’re visiting. They may also be able to recommend some hidden gems for you to visit!

Even though I’ve lived in the UK for most of my life, there is so much it that I haven’t seen and that I would be fascinated to learn more about! They’re are quite a few places here and all over the world, that are now on my bucket list!

In 2019, I had a four day break in Valencia, the home of paella, with my friend, Martine. As it was our first time there, we decided to take a guided walking tour of the city so that we could become familiar with it and make the most of the time we were there. The company we used was Free Tour Valencia and you are free to decide how much you would like to donate. It was definitely worth it! We learned so much abut the history & culture of Valencia. We also discovered some great beaches and some hidden gems for food & drink. Our lovely guide also introduced us to Agua de Valencia, a delicious local cocktail!

After our tour, we actually felt like locals as we could find our way round and make plans for the rest of our time after there! I’d highly recommend this type of tour on your first day of your vacation. Local hotels often offer tours or you book before you go, to guarantee a place and also, to skip the queues!

Whatever your interests are, or wherever you are planning on going, you can find a guided tour or activity to suit you:

Women’s Guide to Dressing for Business Meetings & Presentations

If you are currently, working from home, and do most of your business by phone or online, you can get away with wearing what you like a lot of the time.  After all, how would anyone know whether you are wearing your best suit or your favourite pyjamas, whilst speaking with them on the phone? Unless, of course, you are having a visual, online meeting such as one on Zoom, for example!

Now that Covid Lockdown restrictions are easing, there will probably be times, when you’re meeting with clients, potential business partners, sponsors or even attending a job interview so you will need to consider your clothes carefully.

    Does appearance really matter?

Several studies have shown that appearance is as important as knowledge or skills when it comes to getting the job,the business or the faith of your client.

To quote journalist, Laura Sinberg:  “Although job-related skills and experience rank high in importance in whether or not you land the position, during the initial hiring process they have less power than most of us think. That’s because the first thing we notice about someone is their appearance, and more specifically, the way they are dressed.”

So if, as the saying goes, first impressions are lasting impressions, let’s get it right first time as there may not be a next time!

    Consider your client or company

If you are meeting somebody in one of the more conservative businesses, such as banking or law, then more traditional business wear would be appropriate. This might be a smart fitted black or navy jacket with matching skirt or trousers, a simple blouse, toning shoes and smart bag or briefcase.

In a less formal environment, such as advertising, PR or media, something trendier, but still smart, would go down well. Think about the same jacket over a dress, with contrasting bag and shoes and perhaps some subtle jewellery.

In some businesses, such as creative ones, even jeans would be considered acceptable but if in doubt, it is always best to err on the side of caution by sticking to smart clothes in subtle colours.

    Think about colour psychology

Certain colours have particular effects on the way people perceive you.  Be aware of the messages you are sending out when you wear them!

    Black

This is the colour most associated with authority and power and is a safe “corporate” colour that goes down well in most interviews or meetings, particularly in the most formal environments. Black from head to toe can look a little severe so break it up with contrasting or toning accessories.

    White

Again, this is a smart, traditional and safe colour for business meetings, but be careful as it stains easily and obviously.  Imagine trying to concentrate on what someone is trying to say when you can’t help but focus on the black mark on their collar!

    Red

Considered an extreme colour, red symbolises confidence, passion, sexiness, assertion and confrontation, so is probably best only worn in small amounts in the form of accessories.

    Brown

Although it is seen as a solid, reliable colour, brown commands less authority than black or navy, in a business environment.

    Blue

Navy is considered as “corporate” as black, whilst many surveys show that  lighter shades of blue symbolise loyalty and trustworthiness, making it one of the best colours to wear for an interview or business meeting.

    Keep accessories simple and subtle

As with stains on clothing, it is difficult for the people you are talking with to concentrate on what you have to say or offer if they are focusing on your chunky diamante necklace!  You can’t go wrong if you choose subtle, conservative jewellery, classic handbags and shoes with heels you can walk around in, all day.  Needless to say, you should avoid “bling” at all times.  The exception to this would be if you were promoting your jewellery and accessory business or if you were trying to get work with a company that sells this type of jewellery!

    Dress modestly

Showing your cleavage, midriff or too much leg will send out the wrong messages in a business environment and may prevent you from being taken seriously.  Save looking sexy for another time and place. You can still look feminine and attractive but you must aim to do this in an elegant and classy way.

Here are some ways you can achieve this:

    • Moderate heels  in fashionable but ladylike styles
    • Fitted jackets that emphasise the waist
    • Stylish blouses, shaped to fit and emphasise your feminine shape without showing your cleavage and preferably, without frills and flounces
    • Figure skimming, rather than skin tight, dresses with no fussy details
    • Black or natural hosiery (no patterns) or if in summer and in one of the less formal businesses, bare legs with a not-too-short dress may be appropriate
    • Classic, feminine watches – and always wear a watch in a business meeting as it conveys punctuality
    • Always be well groomed. Wear some make-up as it looks like you’ve made an effort but keep it subtle and natural.  Save your dark red lips for a night out!
    • Keep nails manicured (no chipped nail polish!) and hair should be neat, not overly styled and not covering too much of the face.

What message do you want to send out?

As the first thing we notice about people is the way they present themselves, you must consider:

    • How you want to be perceived as a person, employee or colleague?
    • What service or product you are selling or promoting?

Use the information you now have to ensure you dress in a way that conveys your personal message in the right way.

Obviously, you will want to show how your product, service and/or experience can benefit them as clients, partners or employers. This will be much easier if you have already gained their attention for the right reasons i.e. because you look the part!

Yes, Looking good is only half the picture but it’s a great place to start!

How to have a Staycation at home

food and entertainment. Since the average visit abroad lasts around 10 nights, the all-in average holiday cost amounted to £380 per day, or £95 per person per day” Not having to pay for flights & accommodation, would equate to a big saving! I also like the idea of a “mini” staycations at home i.e. on several weekends, throughout the year.

Here are some tips on how to feel like you are having a lovely holiday, in your own home- some of which are good for any season:

    1. Get your house “Staycation ready”!

Clean & tidy the house and get it ready for your staycation, the day before it starts. Think about your favourite hotel rooms and get the bedrooms to mirror these. Make the beds and, perhaps, fold down the sheets and scatter some chocolates, or rose petals, over them, before bedtime! You can check out some more ideas on Swoonworthy Styling website. If you like having coffee/tea in your hotel room, you could set up a kettle, some cups and coffee/tea, on a table in your room. I have this in my own bedroom, all year round, as I love my coffee first thing in the morning! You can store some milk, water and perhaps, some breakfast croissants, in a portable mini fridge, which would also be handy for day trips and picnics, during your staycation @ home. Add some lovely fragrances to the house, that remind you of your favourite holidays. These could be tropical, mediterranean, beachside or woodland scents. You can find a great range on Amazon. If you have kids at home, a few seaside decorations would be a good idea.

    2. Set up your garden to look, and feel, like a resort

You can easily create a holiday vibe, in your garden by adding a few items, that remind you of places you have visited. Firstly, lay out some sunbeds so you can chill outside with a book and/or a cocktail from your outdoor bar. The Tiki bar, pictured above, has a lovey, tropical vibe. You can add a few matching cushions, drinking glasses and a cocktail making set, to complete the look. You can also create a bar area, on an outdoor table, if you’d rather not buy one. You can find a great range of cocktail recipe books on Amazon Now light some scented candles and add a few outdoor lights to enjoy when the sun sets. If it’s a little chilly outside, you can use an outdoor heater, chiminea or fire pit to warm up!

    3. Hire a Pool or Hot Tub

If you are not lucky enough to have your own pool or hot tub, you can always hire one (or both) for your staycation @ home. This particular company, Hydro Hot Tubs, is based in South East England and will deliver to homes in Surrey, Sussex & Kent. They supply a range hot tubs for 4-7 people and 13.25 x 6.5 ft Steel Rectangular or 18 x 9 ft Steel Oval Frame Pools. Hot tubs are available for a minimum of 4 days from £140 and pools for a minimum of 7 days from £249.97. They will be delivered, set up and collected by the company, at the end of your hire period. They will also explain exactly how to use the tubs/pools. For more information about all their products, check out their website: Hydro Hot Tubs. If you don’t live in this area, or country, just google search Hot Tub & Pool hire companies which deliver to your area.

    4. Film nights, inside or outside

My family loves watching movies together so we often, grab some snacks/drinks or create a, movie/TV themed meal. Then, chill out, in front of the TV. There are so many choices available on your standard TV channels or on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video My kids bought me a projector, last Christmas, and it is truly amazing! You can watch films, or TV shows, projected onto a white wall or screen, It really feels like you have your own private cinema. We are also going to try it out in the garden soon! Amazon has a great range of projectors & screens, at very reasonable prices or, if you’d prefer, you can have a company like Moonlit Events, to set up the “outdoor cinema experience” for you. They will deliver all the required equipment, set everything up and collect when it’s over. They are based in Surrey but will deliver across the UK ( For bookings outside a 12 mile radius, different rates do apply) Check out their website for more information. You can also check out Ideal Home for some more great ideas for your outdoor cinema experience or Good Housekeeping for some more ways to make have a fun “movie night” at home, with the family

    5. Enjoy World Food in, and out, of your home:

Eating the local food, of my favourite travel destinations, always brings back lovely memories and makes me feel like I am being transported back to those places! I also like to try food from places I have not yet visited but are on on my travel bucket list. There are so many amazing world food recipe books available, so whether you feel like some Mediterranean, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Thai, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Antipodean, American, Caribbean or even traditional British food, you will find something to suit your taste. There are even Disney themed cookery books -I’m sure the kid would love these! Eat around the table (in or outside) and play some music that reminds you of the holiday location. Don’t forget to pair some appropriate drinks with your food. I love combining, either red or white, Sangria with Spanish meals. Loved those days when you could share your Sangria, before Covid hit! For more great food and drink pairing ideas, check out The Flavour Principle guide book

When you are away on holiday, you can also enjoy a meal out, to a local restaurant, so why not treat yourself, whilst you’re on your staycation at home? Another option is to order a take-away or have a meal served for you, at home, by a local catering company.

    6. Take Day Trips

Plan some days out during your staycation. There are lots of options – here are just a few suggestions for places to visit. click on the links for more info:

    7. Glamping in the Garden

Whether it’s to celebrate a special occasion or just to chill out with nature, Glamping is a great idea. It’s just like camping with a but of added luxury! If you don’t already have a tent, you can hire, or buy, some luxury ones, for your garden glamping experience. There is something special about being this close to nature- hearing the birds in the morning and smelling the flowers is so calming. Added bonus- you don’t have to share your loos/bathrooms/kitchen with strangers! Add some candles, solar lights and a fire-pit for so you can enjoy relaxing outside at night.

    8. Take Virtual world tours

Even though you may not be able to travel the world, at the moment, you can still take virtual tours to some amazing places, from the comfort of your own home! Whether you’d like to explore New York, Cape Town, Niagra Falls, Istanbul, London, Sydney, Barcelona, Hawaiian Islands, The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Athens, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Las Vagas or anywhere else in the world, you can find guided tours on YouTube. You can even chose more specific tours of places such as art galleries, museums, scuba diving, railway journeys, helicopter rides, skiing, exploring the Titanic, zoos, safari and theme parks. The kids will really love the Disneyland & Disney World virtual tours & rides – actually, I did too! Some of these may bring back some great memories for you or could actually inspire you to visit places you’ve never been to, in the future!

    9. Have a Spa day at Home

Whether you’re on your own, with a friend or with your partner, Spa days are a great way to feel pampered. So, dim the lights, light some candle candles, add some fairy lights & scented oil diffusers , play some relaxing music and have some lemon & cucumber water and/or a few cocktails ready! Now put on your dressing gown/robe and you’re ready to go! Here are some ideas for creating the perfect spa experience at home:

    • Facial Treatments – Start by cleansing and or/exfoliating your skin, then begin your treatment with a facial steam. It’s great first step as it improves cell vitality and oxygen absorption through skin, for a healthier, younger looking complexion and opens and unclogs pores to allow better penetration of products. You can buy a professional style facial steamer for a very reasonable price or you can try a bit of D.I.Y. by boiling some water, pouring it into a large bowl and adding a squeeze of lemon or some essential oils, covering your head with a towel and placing your face over the steam, for up to 10 minutes (take several 1 minute breaks if your skins feels too hot) Next, apply a face mask. You could try ones for oily, dry, sensitive or for anti-aging, depending on your skin type. Relax on a bed, sofa, in a bath or hot tub, while your masks get to work. Next, remove mask before apply a moisturiser to suit your skin. Check out some more ideas Wiki tips on how to Exfoliate, Steam and Use Face Masks
    • Treat your feet: This Misiki foot spa massager relaxes your feet, promotes blood circulation with it’s oxygen bubbles, relieve stress and fatigue, improve your sleeping quality, with massage rollers and exfoliates to help remove calluses, corns and dead skin with it’s footstone. For a more frugal option, add some foot soak salts to a large bowl, or a bucket of warm water and soak your feet for 20 to 30 mins then exfoliate any callouses or dry skin with a foot exfoliator . Next, dry your feel, apply foot cream and slip on a pair of moisture retaining socks (which can be worn overnight)
    • Have a Massage: If your friend or partner is not a qualified masseur, The Shiatsu massager (see photo in gallery above) would be a great option as it provides deep tissue massages on your neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, waist, foot, tights, calves, legs, feet and arms – helping your full body parts to release stress, relieve sore muscles, and help you relax.
    • Relax in your bath : Now it’s time to chill out in your bath with a bath pillow and some bath bombs, essential oils , body wash or bath salts. or you can relax in your Hot Tub, if you have one.
    • Moisturise your body: Use your favourite body moisturiser then put on your dressing gown and relax with some herbal water, some bubbly or a nice cocktail/mocktail and a lovely meal!

    10. Take lots of photos and keep a journal of your Staycation @ home!

Make it feel like a vacation/holiday by creating memories in photos and/or videos. As so many photos taken on your phone are lost or forgotten, I thought it would be a good idea to create a journal of photos, with written descriptions, so that you and your loved ones, look back, in years to come, and be reminded of all the fun you had, even in these difficult times! Amazon has a great range of photo journals, some of which also have a storage pocket for DVDs/CDs. There is also a great range of photo journal kits, which include marker pens and other accessories, to create your personal memory book. I use my phone to take all my photos so I use either Snapfish app, and get 50 free prints a month (you only pay for the postage) or the Freeprints app, which gives you 45 free prints a month or a free canvas 8 x 8 photo tile, using any of the photos on your phone. Both apps are free to download and also offer a range of photo gifts, at very reasonable prices. Here is an example of a lovely journal, created by my sister, Sophie, for her husband, Mark’s 50th birthday:

If you’d rather keep your photos virtual, the Amazon Photo app enables you to organise and see your photos on your Fire TV . You’ll be able to sit back on your living room sofa, and flip through your personal photos and videos on the biggest screen in your home. To see your photos via with the Fire TV Amazon Photos app, first add the Amazon Photos app to your phone, tablet or computer, and then upload your photos to the app on those devices. In minutes, you’ll see them appear in your Fire TV Amazon Photos app. You can also set a Fire TV screensaver or play a slideshow of your photos. The app is free to download

I hope you enjoy your Staycation at home. I’m definitely going to have at least 2 of these a year from now on – 1 in summer & 1 in winter!

  • Travel

Staycations- what exactly are they and why they so popular right now?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a staycation is “a holiday that someone spends in their own country or home, rather than travelling somewhere else”

Due to varying travel guidelines, due to the coronavirus, more people are considering taking staycations, rather than vacations abroad, right now.

Like many people, I will miss my summer holidays abroad but this situation has made me appreciate how many wonderful places there are in the UK, many of which I have never visited before! I was planning a family break in San Sebastian this summer but will probably have to wait until next year now! Instead, we are now looking at staycation options. There are so many to choose from and we will probably save quite a bit of money in the process!

Now, let’s look at the various options:

    • Beach staycations
    • City breaks
    • Country breaks
    • Adventure holidays
    • Safari parks
    • Cultural/Historical breaks
    • Staycations at home

I’ll be exploring all these options in my posts, in the next week or so. I will be looking at ideal breaks for family, couples and friends. Today I will be focusing on UK Beach Holidays!

    UK Beach Staycations

There are so many amazing beaches in the UK. Whether you are into water sports, sailing, exploring, getting a culture fix, chilling on the beach, or indulging in delicious food and drink, you will find something to suit you!

The Beach is my happy place

If you are into watersports, such as surfing, sea kayaking, kite surfing, body boarding & sailing, you’ll find plenty of opportunites, as recommended by The National Trust & Countryfile. ( You can still chill on the beaches here, by the way!)

    Devon & Cornwall:

Combesgate, Croyde and Woolacombe beaches, in North Devon are great for surfing, whether you are an experienced surfer or keen to try it out for the first time. Gwithian Beach, Cornwall is one of the best spots for kite surfing and the swells from the Atlanic are good for flat water sailing. Watergate Bay and Poldhu Cove, in Cornwall is very popular with surfers. Poldhu Cove has a small, family-friendly , surf school, run by Dan Joel, a former professional surfer who works in partnership with the National Trust: Dan Joel Surf School or check out this surf school that caters for beginners to experts Croyde: Full or Half-Day Surf Lesson

Other things to see and do in the area:

There is a great range of restaurants and bars here too. We had a family holiday in Braunton, North Devon, a few years ago and discovered some great places there, including, the lovely Heanton Court Vintage Inn, in Barnstable. It, originally, was an ancient manor house for distinguished families, descended from King Edward IV. It’s now a family friendly Pub, serving a wide selection of food, ales, beers wines and soft drinks from 11am till late, everyday. It’s a beautiful, historic building, with stunning view over the estuary and Tarka Trail

We also visited Ilfracome Harbour, while we were in North Devon. It’s the largest harbour on the North Devon coast and has been in existence, as a port, for several centuries. You can park and leave your car, then walk around, exploring the area. There is so much to do here including coastal cruises, fishing, sea-life safaris and diving or you can just explore the Quay and the surrounding streets. Here you’ll restaurants, cafes, tea gardens and pubs, many with outside seating. We found the lovely Curiosity Cottage Tea rooms, a family run cafe with a good choice of meals and homemade afternoon tea.

There are also lots of small shops, art galleries and general stores. Wandering round, you can’t miss Damien Hirst’s 66 foot stainless steel and bronze sculpture named Verity depicts a pregnant woman with layers of skin and flesh removed from one side to expose a fœtus, muscle layers and a skull underneath. On Hirst’s website it says: “Verity stands on a base of scattered legal books and holds the traditional symbols of Justice – a sword and scales”. It’s on loan to Ilfracombe for 20 years (since 2012) Locals & tourists have mixed feelings about the statue – some love it and some hate it – you can decide for yourself , when you see it!

You can check out more restaurants, bars and cafes, in Devon here on Trip Advisor and 15 of the best restaurants in Cornwall, as recommended by Conde Nast Travel You can find lots of attraction and fun things to do here in both North Devon and Cornwall

Did you know that Cornwall is a popular location with TV/Film companies and has been used in some, seriously famous. films or TV shows? Here are some of the most popular filming locations:

    • Charlestown –   The films Pirates of the Caribbean and Apocalypto were filmed here, along with the hit TV series, Poldark
    • Port Isaac – This quaint village was used for the filming of the Doc Martin TV series

    The Dorset Coast

The stunning Dorset coastline, in the South of England, is 142 kilometres (88 mi) long ( excluding the shoreline of Pool Harbour) running from Lyme Regis, in the west, to Highcliffe, in the east. There are SO many beautiful places to explore, and things to do here, many of which are on my “bucket list” including visiting Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove!

Check out some ideas for things to do in Dorset

I often visit friends who live along the Dorset coast so I’ll be focusing these areas today: Sandbanks, Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Mudeford Quay. They are all quite close to each other so wherever you choose to stay, you could easily have a day trip to the others! See the video above for some more Dorset ideas.

Sandbanks Beach runs along a small peninsula between Poole and Bournemouth.

With it’s breathtaking views and soft golden sand, this Blue Flag beach is recognised as one of the best in the UK. It’s seaside properties are some of the most expensive, in the world – it’s often referred to as Britain’s Palm Beach! It’s clean, generally calm, waters are perfect for families or, for just chilling by the sea! Parasols, deck chairs and sports equipment such as volleyball & table tennis kits, are available from the beach front office. If you want to try some watersports, you should check out the Watersports Academy which has a wide range activities to suit all ages, skills, accompanied with fun qualified instructor. It has direct access to Poole Harbour’s sheltered and waist-deep water. The harbour, is the world’s second largest natural harbour in Dorset and is home to several marinas and yacht clubs.

A fun annual event, I attended with friends, a few years ago, was the Sandbanks beach party. Sadly, the event had to be cancelled this year, due to coronavirus but tickets for July 2021 are now on sale. The gates open to all ticket-holders from 1pm to enjoy an afternoon of Sandpolo (polo on the beach!) Spectators can get close to the action and fully appreciate the gladiatorial nature of polo! My sister highly recommends the Sandbanks Hotel Step off it’s lovely terrace, straight onto the beach, with seven miles of golden sand! The hotel has 3 restaurants, The Sea View & The Amalfi Beach, which are only available to hotel guests The Pizza on the Beach (located on their) beach terrace) which also offers take-away service for non-residents. Another stunning place to stay is the Hotel Du Vin. Poole’s centre and Dolphin Shopping Centre is only 15 minutes’ walk away, whilst Poole Park and Boating Lake is 20 minutes away on foot. Poole’s beaches can be reached within a 10-minute walk. The French bistro serves locally sourced food and the bar has an extensive wine list. Couples, particularly, highly rate this hotel for it’s romantic ambience! If you are looking for self catering accommodation for up to 8 people, 1 Seascapes is a good option. Bournemouth

There are so many things to see and do in this lovely coastal town and on it’s 7 miles of sandy coastline. Bournemouth Pier is situated on the beach, right next to the city centre. Other beaches include Durley Chine, Alum Chine. Boscombe and Southbourne. Here is the Bournemouth Guide for some great ideas

    Food and Drink:

I had a couple of nice meals, on a day trip to Bournemouth Beach, The Westbeach seafood restaurant & beach bar, just metres from the beach & Bournemouth Pier. It’s one recommend as a “local gem” in Bournemouth, according to the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2019 and It’s earned itself great reviews from critics such as AA Gill. You can sit inside or on the terrace. The other lovely one was Vesuvio Italian restaurant, located on Alum Chine beach, with idyllic views from Old Harry Rocks to the Isle of Wight. Again, you can eat inside, or on the beach terrace. They also have a playground, at the back, for the kids.

Other things to see and do:

The Oceanarium, is located next to Bournemouth Pier, on the beach front, just a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Have a magical underwater journey and discover 1000’s of amazing creatures above and below the waves- great fun for all the family. Explore the in the Oceanarium in the video below:

Check out the watersports, walking & hiking, entertainment & shopping! There also advice on a variety of places to stay while you’re here.

    Christchurch & Mudeford Quay

Christchurch adjoins Bournemouth in the west and the New Forest lies to the east. The town’s harbour, beaches, nature reserves and historically important buildings have made Christchurch a popular tourist destination. The town centre lies between the rivers Avon and Stour which flow directly into Christchurch Harbour. The harbour is a protected wildlife refuge and is home to large populations of swans, waders and other bird life. Mudeford is a former fishing village at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour in Dorset. Mudeford Quay is situated at the entrance to Christchurch harbour, it’s is the departure point for ferries to Mudeford Sandbank  On most days. from the beach here, you can see the Isle of Wight and Needles across the Christchurch Bay.

Food, Drink and Things to do:

The Jetty restaurant, at the Harbour Hotel, in Mudeford, is a multi-award-winning restaurant, perched right on the water’s edge and with spectacular views across the harbour. It specialises in locally-caught seafood paired with seasonal ingredients from the surrounding New Forest. We celebrated a friend’s birthday here and the food, drinks and service were great! I also love The Boathouse, in Christchurch. It has lovely, panoramic views of the quay and you can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner, alfresco or indoors. If you fancy a bit of crazy golf, you can play on their course and grab a nice take-away instead! The Thomas Tripp, in Christchurch town centre, is a fun pub & music venue, with tasty food. It was named after the a legendary local smuggler, who was a hero in the 17th century, as smuggling was an honourable tradition, in the area, in those days! We went to a fancy dress. Pirate Party they held there, last year and it was great fun. Hopefully, they will be able to have another one next year! They also, regularly, have quiz nights and great music, from local musicians- definitely worth a visit, or two!

    Brighton

Brighton- It’s a colourful, vibrant, cosmospolitan, creative place. Which is probably why many writers, musicians, artists and ‘foodies’ are attracted to this area! According to the Visit Brighton guide, it is “Often voted the happiest place in the UK, the city offers a fantastic mix of Regency heritage, fabulous shopping, funky arts and music, beachfront cool and year round festivals and events” I do love Brighton. The beach is pebbly so be careful, if you are walking barefoot, whilst you’re here!

    Food an Drink:

Some of my favourite places to eat in Brighton are Polpo, Bistro@Hotel du Vin and Terre à Terre. Polpo is a bacaro – a Venetian word to describe a back-street wine bar that serves small plates of delicious seafood, meaty snacks and simple delicacies from the Veneto region of northern Italy- great if, like me, you love small portions with lots of different flavours! It has an authentic, Venetian feel. The Bistro@Hotel du Vin has a nice French vibe about it. They serve classic French & modern British food and their Sommelier can recommend the perfect wine to pair a particular dish, if you need some advice. Terre à Terre, in the Lanes, may be a vegetarian restaurant, but everyone I’ve been there with (even the hardcore carnivores) love this place! The flavours of the food are delicious. The late food critic,  AA Gill reviewed the restaurant, saying that Terre a Terre “probably the best vegetarian restaurant in Britain” and he was very sceptical at first as he was definitely not a veggie! How to Find the Best Hairstyle to Showcase Your Beautiful Face

I was SO excited to get back to my hairdresser, David Masters, again, now that Lockdown has relaxed a bit- I bet you are too!

If you are thinking of trying a new hairstyle, check out these tips for finding the best ones for your face shape

Your hairstyle is an important part of your overall image. By getting your hair cut and styled to suit your face, you will get the look that is the most flattering for you. You might be surprised at how very different you can look with the right hairstyle. Finding the hairstyle to suit your face is often challenging. You have to balance the current trends with what will look best on you. But how do you know what will make you look your best?

This advice will help you discover which hairstyle is right for your face and how to choose a style that will enhance your looks and give you the absolute best look for you.

    Figure Out Your Face Shape

In order to find the right hairstyle for your face, you first want to determine your face shape.  Here is a brief guide, with some examples of celebrities, who have each of these shapes:

Oval: This type of face is oval-shaped so it’s equal in size on top and bottom. This is the easiest to style, due to it’s balanced proportions. Most hairstyles suit this face shape

Heart: Wider at the temples and narrower at the chin.

Round: This face type is similar to the oval, but shorter.

Triangle: The opposite of the heart, this type of face is usually wide at the chin with a narrow forehead.

Square: A strong jaw and squared-off features are typical of this type

Long Oval or Rectangle: A longer version of the Oval or the Square, (if the jaw line is less rounded) this face shape has a higher forehead and longer chin

Go Long to Slim the Face

For round faces, the worst thing you can do is to get a chin length cut. That will just draw attention to the roundness of the face. To make your face look longer and slimmer, keep hair long, at least shoulder length. While some layering at the bottom can work, it is usually best to keep layers out of the face and below the jaw line. Longer styles also look great on an oval-shaped face but are not so good if you have a long face shape, unless you combine it with a fringe

Use a Fringe to Hide Flaws

A fringe can camouflage a large forehead, or wrinkles! They can also be used to soften a face. They usually look best when they are not too full, so stick to just a light coverage. Fringes go well with heart-shaped faces to minimize the width of the forehead, and are also ideal for softening a square or long face. Avoid using them with a round face shape, since this will cut off length and make the face look even shorter.

    Layers Create Softness

When you have straight lines in your face, such as those with a square, Triangle or rectangular face, some well-placed layers can really help soften your face and create a more feminine look. Be careful of having too many layers, since this can actually start to look frizzy and unkempt, but a handful of wisps looks great.

Short Cuts or Short Bobs add Width to the Jaw

Obviously, if you have already have a naturally wide chin, as in a square or triangle shaped face, you won´t want to opt for a bob or any other chin-length cut. However, for heart-shaped faces, this is the ideal hairstyle to balance out the wider forehead. Short hair or bobs can also be used successfully with a rectangular or long oval, to shorten the face, particularly if combined with a layered cut, to add texture and softness to the face.

Add Some Curl For Extra Body

Not everyone is blessed with full hair and when you have a triangular or a long, slim face, a little extra volume can really help. Going with a soft curl can help add some volume to the hair and balance out these face types.

Now that you have a fairly good idea of what your face shape is, and which hairstyles compliment it, you can take a look at a variety of hairstyles from magazines, the Internet or hairstylists’ style books and decide which is the right one for your face and to your personal taste. Choosing the best hairstyle for you will result in a great look that enhances your natural beauty and makes you feel your best everyday!

Men’s Guide to Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

Everyone should have a Capsule wardrobe that consists of basic, essential items, in neutral colours that can be worn with other items of clothing, or accessories, to create a variety of looks.

    Choose neutral colours

Black/grey, white/off-white, beige/dark brown, Navy or denim ( choose those that best suit your individual colouring)  can be mix and matched with other colours or prints and  to create dozens of different outfits.

    Look for timeless pieces

These could last for several seasons; there is something to be said for the jeans/shirt/blazer combo that is appropriate for most occasions these days. If you look for styles, but always look good, regardless of the latest trend, you are on to a winner! These include single breasted jackets or suits, flat fronted, straight or slim cut trousers, shirts, sweaters, t-shirts and jeans.

These are items of clothing that could hold their own in any decade, not for being at the height of fashion, but for their simplicity and quiet class.

Plan your entire wardrobe for versatility and around your lifestyle. Have two or three pairs of jeans or casual trousers, a couple jackets, suits and tops, appropriate to your work and casual needs. Choose just two or three classic colours that all complement each other and you´ll be able to mix and match your entire wardrobe, creating dozens of different outfits.  Opt for mostly solid colours rather than prints and you´ll have more combinations available to you.

Throw in a scarf or two and range of different belts and masculine accessories and you can have even more looks, all with just a few select items.

Below is a guide to the basics of a versatile man’s wardrobe.  Obviously, your capsule wardrobe should reflect your personality and lifestyle and your individual needs will depend on this e.g. if work necessitates classic business wear, your requirements will be very different to those of say, a personal trainer in a gym.

The aim is to build up your basic capsule wardrobe, then supplement this with the trends of the season. It is wise to pay more for the capsule wardrobe essentials, that will last from season to season, possibly year to year, and less on the trends which you may be fashionable for only a short time.

    Choosing Casual and Smart Trousers

    Finding the right fit:

When choosing casual trousers, the trouser leg should cover the top of your shoes so that socks are not visible but they should not be so long that they drag on the ground.  The same is true for more formal trousers and ideally the hems of these will be slightly angled to allow the front to sit just on the shoes whilst the back just touches the top of the shoe’s heel.

The waist of any pair of trousers should fit comfortably -you should be able to fit two fingers in the waistband.  They should fit above the hipbone but below the navel.  Very low slung waistbands should be avoided as should very high waistbands should be, especially if you have a larger tummy.

The distance between the top button of the trousers and the bottom of the crotch is known as the rise. Whilst most men will like a little bit of room down there, it also important not to have too long a rise as it will look like the trousers are too big.  The seat of a pair of trousers, or the bottom area should fit snugly but not too tightly as this will make your bottom look bigger and will be quite uncomfortable, as you can imagine!

    The truth about pleats:

Many men wear pleated trousers because they believe that they disguise any weight carried around the tummy area.  The real truth is that they do the exact opposite!  They actually draw attention to the area and add excess bulk and material.  The more effective solution for the larger tummy is to create smoother lines and detract attention by wearing flat-fronted styles that are not too tight around the waist.

    Choosing Jeans

Buying jeans can seem like a minefield with all the styles and washes to choose from!  It is always best to ask the advice of a salesperson in a dedicated jean store or department as they know the different styles available, where to find them in the shop, and which ones are likely to suit you.

There are five basic styles available:

    • Boot cut – slim lines and a slight flare at the bottom. Believe it or not they make be making a comeback, according to GQ Magazine: “Sure, you’ve probably been told to shy away from boot-cut jeans, but if you’re after a 1970s-style fit à la Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood, then reconsider. With a slimmer thigh and a sharp outward taper at the bottom, pair with a Western-style boot for a real menswear moment.” What do you think guys??
    • Easy fit – more generous in the seat, thigh and leg and tend to taper slightly at the bottom. Good if you don’t feel comfortable in more fitted styles
    • Straight leg – don’t have any flare and are a leaner cut than easy fit. This style is good for most body shapes as long as they are not too tight or too loose.
    • Slim Fit – a very nice, flattering style for most men of slim/medium/athletic build   – not too baggy and not to tight
    • Skinny – best left to teenagers and ‘twenty somethings’ who can look great in them.  Probably not a good look for older men –except, perhaps,  rock star types who can carry them of with the right personality, confidence and attitude!

A dark wash looks smarter for evenings or more dressy occasions. A slightly distressed look can look more stylish than a flat colour but keep very distressed, ripped or light washes, for more casual occasions.

A really good buy would be a pair that best fits and flatters your body shape. They should be comfortable and go with many items in your wardrobe.  Lower waisted or medium rise will be most flattering on most body types.

Remember- if in doubt, always ask for the opinion of the shop assistant and/or your honest shopping buddy!

    Chinos

These can be flat fronted or pleated and are extremely versatile as they bridge the gap between very casual or formal. They can be worn with say, with polo shirt for more casual occasions or teamed with a shirt and contrasting jacket for a more a dressy look, when jeans may be inappropriate.

    Dress Trousers

For occasions where you need to be even smarter, it’s good idea to have a couple of pairs of dress trousers. As with Chinos, they can be pleated or flat fronted. Remember that pleats should stay closed – if they pull, it means the trousers are too tight. Lightweight wool or cotton mixes can be worn for smart summer occasions while a thicker, heavier, wool or wool mix, is ideal for winter wear. They are best worn with classic shoes e.g. black oxford lace-ups, and a simple slim belt and a dressier shirt.

Always wear black shoes with charcoal grey or black trousers and black, navy or brown shoes with beige or taupe trousers plus belt to match shoes, of course.

    Shorts

Most men look best in Bermuda style- knee length or just above.

Styles can be plain or cargo and in a variety of colours and fabrics, including denim.  The same rules apply as for trousers i.e. avoid pleats or cargo styles if you want to appear slimmer.

    Choosing shirts and sweaters:

    Casual or T-shirts

A man’s casual shirt and can be long or short sleeved. They come in plain, checked, striped or prints to suit your personal style and personality.  Choose the cut to suit your shape – if you are slim, a fitted style looks great and if you are carrying a bit of extra weight, a tapered style would suit. Very baggy shirts are flattering on nobody- they will only make you look bigger and shapeless!

T-shirts can be casual or smarter e.g. polo shirts

Casual shirts & T-shirts look great with jeans, chinos, cargos or shorts.

    Oxford Shirt

    Ben Sherman Oxford Shirt

These are slightly more formal shirts but less so than dress shirts. They may bridge the gap when you need something a bit dressier but not too formal.  They are classic in style, with tiny buttons on the collar and are made of heavyweight cotton so they tend to last longer than dress shirts. They look good worn with jeans or chinos, perhaps with a jacket or blazer, for a smart casual look.

    Dress/Business Shirts

    Tommy Hilfiger Men’s Business Shirt
    Siliteenon Men’s Formal Dress Shirt

These shirts are more tailored for use with suits, you will obviously need more of these if you need to  wear suits for work but it is a good idea for most men to have at least two or three – one white, one coloured and one striped so that you will be prepared for any occasion.

When shopping for dress shirts, pay even closer attention to sizing. It is advisable to seek help from a sales assistant as they should be experts in this field.  Shirt cuffs should preferably french, worn with cuff links and should fall about ¼ of an inch below your suit sleeve and you should be able to fit two fingers (no more or less) inside the fastened collar.

As dress shirts tend to be made of finer fabric, they are more likely to shrink slightly after a few washes, so it may be better to go slightly larger than smaller. The sales person should be able to advise you on this.

    Sweaters

These can be crew neck (round), V neck or polo (roll neck) and in plain colours. They are must haves for the cooler seasons. Crew and V-necks can be teamed with shirts or t-shirts, for infinite variety. Polo or roll necks are best avoided if you are carrying extra weight or if you have a short neck.  A lightweight cardigan is a great alternative to the sweater.  Remember, all of these should be fitted (not tight) rather than loose, to be flattering on all body shapes.

    Blazers/Sports Jackets

    Jack & Jones Blazer

Smart, blazer style, jackets that do not have matching trousers are traditionally known at sports jackets.  These are casual, but smart, jackets that can be worn with shirts, sweaters and even t-shirts. They come in a variety of colours and materials. They can turn jeans from scruffy to chic in an instant and nicely bridge the gap between very casual and business or formal. Most men would benefit from having at least one or two of these in their wardrobe

    Casual Jackets

These can be in a variety of fabrics including wool, wool-mix, denim, suede and leather and styles can include short, bomber, hip length or ¾, overcoat, style. Choose a style that suits your individual body shape and colouring.  One or two of these are great for casual day wear, where anything more formal would make you feel overdressed.

    Coats

For men, these tend to be overcoat style (crombie), single or double breasted or trenchcoat style for wet weather wear.  Keep colours muted or traditional –taupe, beige, charcoal, Navy or black.

    Suits and Ties

    Hugo Boss Slim line Suit

The three traditional cuts of suit are –

    • The British cut
    • The Italian cut
    • The American cut

This video by Antonio Centeno of Real Men Real Style sums up the difference perfectly. You can then decide which style is right for you!

It is vitally important that the suit fits you well and most shops offer a tailoring service – the shop assistant will measure and pin the garment as required.  If this service is not available, it is better to go slightly larger than smaller then take it to a good tailor who will alter it for you to ensure a perfect fit.

    How to Choose a Tie

Like any accessory, ties can make or break an outfit. You can use them to add a splash of colour, that suits you, or to express your personality (Not through novelty ties- we’re talking stylish and subtle here!)  Though there are thousands of varieties available, it’s a good idea to keep it simple.

Ties are available in a variety of fabrics but silk ties are a very good choice.  When choosing designs, remember that vertical lines will make you appear taller whilst horizontal lines will make you appear wider.  If you are wearing it with a patterned or striped shirt, the tie design should be bolder and should pick out some more subdued colours from the shirt e.g. you could wear a blue and white striped shirt with a plain blue tie and cuff links or a patterned tie where the blue features strongly. Narrower ties are more flattering on smaller men and slightly wider ties are more suited to men with a larger chest width.

You don’t have to pay a fortune for good quality ties. All the tie sets in the slideshow above are from Amazon– many are silk and some sets come with matching pocket squares and/or cufflinks

*It’s a good idea when buying tailored clothes, to ask the shop assistant to measure you and to record the measurements for you.  Below is a men’s measurement minder so you never forget!*

    Accessories

Men’s accessories include shoes, watches, belts, cuff-links, wallets, scarves, sunglasses, prescription eyewear and even types of jewellery!

    Men’s accessories

    Shoes:

Luckily for men, shoe choices are relatively limited and are less susceptible to the whims of fashion.  This means that a good quality pair of shoes could last for several years.

Here are some examples of styles that are widely available:

    The Oxford Lace-up

This style can serve as the perfect complement to most suits and is a must-have for  the stylish wardrobe.

    The Brogue

This is one of the most classic styles. It is similar to the Oxford Lace-up but has tiny holes punched into the leather, forming a pattern

    The Loafer

This classic Italian style can be worn with jeans, trousers or suits (without the tie) to achieve a cool yet sophisticated look.  The only thing to avoid is a low vamp ( the vamp refers to how far the loafer comes up the foot). A vamp that is too low, reveals too much of the sock and can ruin an, otherwise, good look!

    The Chelsea Boot

These are a classic design that can go with everything! They offer an alternative to the average dressy shoe and can bring personality and sexiness to a look.  They aren’t as bulky as a walking or military style boot and are much smarter.  The side gore (a small, stretchy, elastic panel) lets the boot fit comfortable without the need for laces.

    The Driving Moccasin

These are a great style for all day comfort and because of their simple design, can go with almost everything (with the exception of formal suits). You can find them in a variety of colours so you can be a conservative, or adventurous, as you like!

    Trainers

These don’t have to be reserved for sports –there are many smarter and funkier styles to choose from for casual street wear.  I’s also fashionable to wear trainers with dressier clothes right now. They can add subtle colour and express personality.  Just make sure they aren’t too outrageous or ugly!  Leather trainers are a great option and in darker colours, can provide dressier look without being too formal.

    Shoe Shopping tips

    • When trying on shoes, wear the right type of sock –don’t try on dressy shoes with a thick white sports sock, for instance!
    • Always try them on, don’t be tempted to buy them just because they are your size, as all feet are different, and some shoe styles more comfortable than others.
    • If you find a pair of classic shoes that you love, fit like a dream, and that go with lots of your outfits, consider buying 2 pairs, if you can afford to.

    Jewellery

For men, jewellery should be kept to a minimum unless you really want to look like Ali G or Mr. T!  A man’s wedding band or signet ring is nice and subtle.  If it suits your style, then maybe you could try a simple and stylish necklace, braclet or “surf” beads with a t-shirt or funky shirt.

Where earrings and men are concerned, remember that both earrings and some tattoos can create different associations,  for different people. Whilst you may see them as cool or sexy, others may not agree.  If you are comfortable with that,  still want to go ahead and wear them and are confident enough to carry them off, then the choice is, ultimately, yours!

    Watches

One of the most important accessories is a stylish wrist watch.  Whilst a quality watch is a great investment, will last years, and will be noticed (particularly by other men!) it is possible to buy inexpensive watches that look great.  It is advisable to own two different watches – one for smarter outfits and occasions and the other for casual weekend or sports wear.  Classic styles have leather straps, sporty watches-metal linked straps and casual, fun. watches may have fabric, rubber or plastic straps.

Scale needs to be considered too. Keep things in proportion – wider wrists suit larger watches whilst smaller watch faces help a tiny wrist look bigger.

    Belts

Belts are a must have for every man – belt loops just don’t look right without one!  The great thing about belts is that they rarely become out-dated. As with all your clothes, spend most on the best quality classic styles, in different widths and shades, to suit a variety of loop sizes and outfits. Generally, more slender belts are good with smarter trousers and wider, chunkier belts, are great with jeans, cords and more casual outfits.

Ideally speaking, a man’s belt should complement their shoes. Although you needn’t stick rigidly to fashion rules, bear in mind that a brown belt wouldn’t look great with black shoes and vise versa!

    Cuff Links

Even if do not regularly wear suits, many fabulous shirts now have French cuffs and in order to wear them, you will need to have some cuff-links.  You do not have to spend a fortune on them! They should match, or compliment, your tie or echo the colour of a pattern in your shirt. It’s worth investing in a few pairs of cuff-links, in a variety of colours, to suit your taste.

    Sunglasses and Prescription Eyewear

    Prada Sport Sunglasses

Men’s glasses should be kept simple and be in colours that suit your skin tone e.g. black or silver for cool skin tones and brown or gold for warm skin tones. As with watches, think about scale and proportion- larger frames for wide or rounder faces and smaller ones for narrow, smaller faces.

Always ask yourself the following questions when buying glasses-

    • Do they fit your face?
    • Are they flattering?
    • Are they too bit/small?
    • Do they work with your colouring?
    • Do they suit your personality?
    • Will they go with most of the colours in my wardrobe?

If in doubt, ask the sales assistant or your trusted shopping buddy for an opinion.

    Wallets

Unless “man bags” take off in a big way, it’s a good idea to choose wallets that are as slim and sleek as possible as a bulky wallet can ruin your look, if stuffed in the pocket of your jeans or trousers!

    General rules for shopping success

    • Make a list of what you need and stick to it, unless you spot something that fits all your criteria.
    • Only choose to buy trends that suit your colouring, body shape, personality, lifestyle and budget. What’s the point of wasting money on an expensive, made-to-measure suit if would only wear once?
    • Remember the 70/30 rule i.e. your wardrobe should contain 30% trends and 70% timeless items to be cost effective.
    • Make sure that what you buy goes with at least 3 other items in your wardrobe.
    • Spend more on timeless classics and less on something that you may only wear for one season.
    • Only buy items in colours outside your own palette if they are not worn near your face e.g. trousers or a jacket with one of your best colour shirts
    • Consider cost per wear – will the number of times you are likely to wear the item offset the cost?
    • If you find style basics that suits you e.g.  sweaters, business shirts,  t-shirts,  or jeans, it may be a worth buying several in different colours.
    • Don’t forget that accessories such as shoes, cuff links, ties, scarves and watches, can totally transform an outfit and effectively double. or treble, the number of outfits in your wardrobe. when combined in different ways!
    • If you are not confident about making choices on your own, take an honest (stylish) friend with you!

Choose items from some or all of the above categories to suit your, lifestyle, personality, colouring, body shape and budget.  If you stick to the “Capsule Wardrobe” ideal i.e. invest in classic essentials, in co-ordinating colours first, then add trends to update and re-fresh your look as required, you will have a versatile, timeless wardrobe that will make it easy to achieve effortless style, without breaking the bank!

  • Health and Wellbeing

What is a healthy gut and why is it so important to your health?

Gut health is a popular topic right now, not surprising as recent research has shown how important it is to our overall health.

Gut health refers to the balance of microorganisms that live in your digestive tract. This is also known as your gut microbiome. According to BMI Healthcare,

“An imbalance in gut bacteria has been found to contribute to chronic diseases such as IBS, diabetes and carcinoma. Studies have also suggested links to mental health and depression, cholesterol levels, and obesity. While we still don’t know everything there is to know about the gut microbiome, we do know that the health of our gut has a huge impact on our overall health. So, boosting your gut health can only be a good thing”

It’s a topic that is of great interest to me as I have had IBS for a number of years.  I know that certain foods, too much caffeine. high stress levels and lack of sleep, can exacerbate my symptoms!

So how do you maintain a healthy gut?

    1. Eating more healthy, whole, foods such as organic, low fat meats or proteins, high Fibre foods e.g. wholegrains, nuts and pulses and getting your “5 a day” from fruits and vegetables.
    2. Avoiding processed foods as they are often high is sugar, fat and additives
    3. Drinking enough water
    4. Prebiotics and Probiotics for healthy gut bacteria -Probiotics are healthy bacteria and include food such as live yogurt, kafir, miso and pickles. Prebiotics feed healthy bacteria and include food such as onions, garlic, asparagus, whole wheat, spinach and oats. You should be able to get enough of both of these from a healthy diet.
    5. Lowering stress levels – meditation, exercise, feel good movies or music can help with this
    6. Eating regularly and slowly
    7. Drinking less alcohol and caffeine
    8. Eating good Fats such as those found in avocados, olive oil, coconut oil salmon and other oily fish
    9. Eating good carbs such as those found in sweet potatoes, whole grains, nuts, Chia seeds, pumkin seeds, lentils, kidney beans and whole fruits
    10. Sleeping well – apps such as Calm or Breathe can help with this

I try to stick to these guidelines but, as we all know, it’s not always easy!  I have noticed that my IBS had flared up during Lockdown, as it’s obviously been a stressful time for everyone.  Then a friend introduced me to the Arbonne 30 days to Healthy Living plan.

She had tried it herself as she wanted to lose a bit of weight and reduce her stress levels and she said it changed her life!  It’s not your classic de-tox or diet. It’s all about re-setting your body and mindset to establish healthy eating habits.

I was keen to try this but didn’t fancy committing to the full 30 days.  There is also a 14 day plan available so I tried this.  I was a bit concerned that I would have horrible detox symptoms, during the first couple of days, such as feeling faint and not being able to continue with my regular workout exercises, but this couldn’t have been further from the truth.  In fact I felt more engergised and my IBS symptoms virtually disappeared after the first few days!  Love that my skin looks and feels really smooth and soft (it’s quite sensitive) after drinking the Skin Elixir supplement and using my RE9 Advanced Prepwork Overnight face jelly which I qualified to receive free with my purchase!

The plan is easy to follow as there are so many delicious food choices, tasty protein/smoothie shakes and lots of yummy (but healthy) snacks allowed between meals!  The hardest thing for me to give up was coffee but I managed to and it got easier after a few days of using the Energy Fizz Sticks!

    Energy Fizz Sticks

I hadn’t planned on losing any weight, but by the end of my 14 days, I had lost 4lbs and felt amazing, without feeling hungry at all! I have had no IBS flare ups and I am feeling much more energised and relaxed and my skin feels really soft and plumped!  I never felt that compromised during the plan as I have discovered so many delicious, healthy alternatives to bad food and drink!

Basically, I am still following the plan although I allow myself 1 cup of coffee in the morning and 1 alcoholic drink, if I am out with friends!

I would honestly recommend this plan to anyone who would like to improve their gut health, energise their bodies, lose weight, improve their skin or maintain a healthy lifestyle. The plan caters for vegans and non vegans so there is something here for everyone!

Arbonne sums the plan up perfectly, in their guidelines:

“ 30 Days to Healthy Living is designed to help each person identify how they can choose to use food as fuel for their bodies to optimise how they look and feel, inside and out. It will help you to identify any foods that you are eating that might not be serving your body well. Our goal is to help you tune in to the messages that your body is sending so that you can eat and drink more intuitively, giving your body the nutrients that it needs to function optimally. The programme will also help support a balanced gut. So much of the body’s overall wellbeing is controlled by our gut, so supporting this area of our body will help optimise how we feel as well as how we look. The programme is also designed to help us feel more confident in ourselves. When we are rested and working to reduce feelings of stress, then we are better able to care for ourselves. A positive mindset can also impact our confidence because when you feel good physically and mentally, you look good too!”

Want some great packing tips for, stress free, holidays?

    “Yes please!”

With Coronavirus lockdown being eased, we can, hopefully, look forward to travelling again soon! I thought it would be a good time to share some useful tips on packing for your break

For many people, knowing what to pack, to look good and feel relaxed, whilst travelling, is a huge dilemma so they end up taking everything but the kitchen sink “just in case” they need it!

Below you will find tips on packing to look and feel great whilst staying well within your baggage allowance

    1.Avoid Pure Cotton

Unless you don’t mind ironing whilst you’re away! Cotton wrinkles rapidly and it is probably one of the most difficult fabrics to pack when traveling. Instead, look for clothing that is either supposed to be wrinkled, such as linen, or which is wrinkle-resistant. There are several brands of clothing which are specially designed not to need ironing and these work very well for travel.

    2.Roll Your Clothes

A good way to pack your clothing is to roll it, rather than fold it. As well as minimising creases, you can make use of every inch of available space e.g. gaps between shoes, bags and hairbrushes etc.  If you roll the more delicate items, with a thin towel or washcloth in them, it will help smooth them out even more.

3.Choose A Capsule Wardrobe and Colour Palette

Pick two main colours, that go together, for your wardrobe, plus two or three accent colours. At least one of your two main colours should be neutrals: black, white, brown, tan, or navy. All your main pieces of clothing e.g. skirts, trousers or shorts, should be one of the two main colors. Smaller items like t-shirts, vests, scarves and belts can be in brighter accent colors.

I love taking dresses as can be any colour/pattern, as long as you have shoes in neutral colours (See tip 5 below). Maxis & midi dresses are great as they are a bang on trend and can be worn casually during the day or dressed up with accessories at night.  This means that all the clothing in your suitcase can be mixed and matched to look great

I bought this dress on Amazon – I love it and it was a bargain!

Take 2 lots of swimwear so they have time to dry out between swims!

A lightweight beachwear cover up, or two, is a must

Don’t forget to take a lightweight jacket, or two, as it may be a bit cooler at night. Denim, black or white are great neutral colours

    4.Pack Lots Of Accessories

Earrings, necklaces and belts take up very little room, yet can change your look in just seconds.

A pair of dangly earrings will dress up a basic blouse for daytime whilst a set of pearl earrings and choker turn that same blouse into the perfect evening wear. You can pack them in a compact jewellery organiser

Bring a couple of different belts and scarves/wraps as well, since these can drastically change how an outfit looks.

A couple of hats would be useful. If they are not foldable, you can put one inside the other and then fill the middle with small items such as, underwear or jewellery. Sunglasses should be packed in your hand luggage so that they are readily available as soon as you step off the plane.

5.Stick To Three Pairs of Shoes

A pair of comfortable shoes such as trainers or flip flops, are essential if you plan on doing any walking or sightseeing.   Stylish but comfortable, wedge shoes are ideal for a dressier occasion such as dinner out with friends or family and, if you are near the beach or plan to enjoy some warm weather, flat sandals can look nice and still let your feet breathe. There really should be no need for more pairs of shoes and if you go with the neutral colours, in your colour palette (see tip 3. above) the three pairs that you bring will match anything in your travel wardrobe. Metallic silver, gold or bronze shoes are also great as they go with any other colours.

    6.Consider Gravity When Packing

Pack heavier items such as shoes, near the bottom and use beach towels or sarongs to create layers and sections in the case so that you can find something in a hurry.  Fill the shoes with socks, underwear and accessories to make the best use of available space. *Remember, if you are using a wheelie case, that will be upright a lot of the time, the heaviest items should be near the wheel end to prevent the case from toppling over*

    7. Pack For The Time Of Day That You Arrive

If you are due to arrive at your destination in the middle of the night, you may want your nightwear and toiletries are at the top of the case. If, on the other hand, you are due to arrive early in the day and want a dip in the pool before you can check into your room, keep your beach towel, sun cream and swimwear within easy reach. Microfibre beachtowels are great for holidays as they are super lightweight yet absorbant!

    8. Always choose lightweight luggage

This will enable you to put more items in your suitcase and still be within the baggage limits. It will also be so much easier to carry, or pull, around the airport and to lift into overhead lockers on the plane!

    9.Downsize Your Toiletries

Carrying miniature sized toiletries will save on space. If you can’t find travel sized versions of your favourite products, you can just decant them into plastic containers, made for the purpose. (Readily available from most pharmacies and supermarkets or on-line stores ) Don’t forget to place containers of liquid in a protective bag in case they leak in transit.

10.Take A Folding Bag (or two!)

These fold away neatly, taking up very little space in your case and can be used as a beach or excursion bag during your break. They are also handy to use on the way home, for duty free shopping!  Choose a neutral colour that will go with all your clothes.

    11. Be Sensible With Security

It’s a good idea to have two identity luggage tags.  One should be on the inside in case the outside label is ripped off.  This will ensure that if your case goes missing, it will always find its way back to you. Use the name of the hotel where you are staying and your mobile number rather than your home address and telephone number.  If you are taking valuables with you, it’s always best to keep them in your hand luggage rather than pack them in the suitcase.

Plan your travel wardrobe ahead of time. Try on everything before you pack it and be sure to only include clothes that fit well and that you find comfortable. Looking great is far easier when you are comfortable with yourself and your clothes. Follow these tips before your next trip and you will be sure to look great and feel great too!

    Have a wonderful, relaxing trip!
