Why short guided tours or activities are a great idea -home or away!

With Lockdown relaxing in the UK, many of us will be wanting to plan our next vacation- I certainly am!

If you do not yet feel comfortable travelling abroad or if money if an issue, you could look at planning a short staycation, or even a few day trips, in your home country.

Unless you just like to spend the whole of your vacation lying on the beach, or by a pool, you might enjoy the benefits of a guided tour or activity. Don’t get me wrong, I love to spend some time chilling by the sea or pool, with a nice book, but I also love to spend some time exploring the area I’m in, socialising with other tourists or locals and trying some new experiences whilst I’m there.

Whether you’re into history & culture, food & drink, nature & adventure , sporting activities, film & music or sightseeing, a guided tour is a great option. You will be shown around by an expert who will give you an idea of the history of the place you’re visiting. They may also be able to recommend some hidden gems for you to visit!

Even though I’ve lived in the UK for most of my life, there is so much it that I haven’t seen and that I would be fascinated to learn more about! They’re are quite a few places here and all over the world, that are now on my bucket list!

In 2019, I had a four day break in Valencia, the home of paella, with my friend, Martine. As it was our first time there, we decided to take a guided walking tour of the city so that we could become familiar with it and make the most of the time we were there. The company we used was Free Tour Valencia and you are free to decide how much you would like to donate. It was definitely worth it! We learned so much abut the history & culture of Valencia. We also discovered some great beaches and some hidden gems for food & drink. Our lovely guide also introduced us to Agua de Valencia, a delicious local cocktail!

After our tour, we actually felt like locals as we could find our way round and make plans for the rest of our time after there! I’d highly recommend this type of tour on your first day of your vacation. Local hotels often offer tours or you book before you go, to guarantee a place and also, to skip the queues!

Whatever your interests are, or wherever you are planning on going, you can find a guided tour or activity to suit you:

How to have a Staycation at home

food and entertainment. Since the average visit abroad lasts around 10 nights, the all-in average holiday cost amounted to £380 per day, or £95 per person per day” Not having to pay for flights & accommodation, would equate to a big saving! I also like the idea of a “mini” staycations at home i.e. on several weekends, throughout the year.

Here are some tips on how to feel like you are having a lovely holiday, in your own home- some of which are good for any season:

    1. Get your house “Staycation ready”!

Clean & tidy the house and get it ready for your staycation, the day before it starts. Think about your favourite hotel rooms and get the bedrooms to mirror these. Make the beds and, perhaps, fold down the sheets and scatter some chocolates, or rose petals, over them, before bedtime! You can check out some more ideas on Swoonworthy Styling website. If you like having coffee/tea in your hotel room, you could set up a kettle, some cups and coffee/tea, on a table in your room. I have this in my own bedroom, all year round, as I love my coffee first thing in the morning! You can store some milk, water and perhaps, some breakfast croissants, in a portable mini fridge, which would also be handy for day trips and picnics, during your staycation @ home. Add some lovely fragrances to the house, that remind you of your favourite holidays. These could be tropical, mediterranean, beachside or woodland scents. You can find a great range on Amazon. If you have kids at home, a few seaside decorations would be a good idea.

    2. Set up your garden to look, and feel, like a resort

You can easily create a holiday vibe, in your garden by adding a few items, that remind you of places you have visited. Firstly, lay out some sunbeds so you can chill outside with a book and/or a cocktail from your outdoor bar. The Tiki bar, pictured above, has a lovey, tropical vibe. You can add a few matching cushions, drinking glasses and a cocktail making set, to complete the look. You can also create a bar area, on an outdoor table, if you’d rather not buy one. You can find a great range of cocktail recipe books on Amazon Now light some scented candles and add a few outdoor lights to enjoy when the sun sets. If it’s a little chilly outside, you can use an outdoor heater, chiminea or fire pit to warm up!

    3. Hire a Pool or Hot Tub

If you are not lucky enough to have your own pool or hot tub, you can always hire one (or both) for your staycation @ home. This particular company, Hydro Hot Tubs, is based in South East England and will deliver to homes in Surrey, Sussex & Kent. They supply a range hot tubs for 4-7 people and 13.25 x 6.5 ft Steel Rectangular or 18 x 9 ft Steel Oval Frame Pools. Hot tubs are available for a minimum of 4 days from £140 and pools for a minimum of 7 days from £249.97. They will be delivered, set up and collected by the company, at the end of your hire period. They will also explain exactly how to use the tubs/pools. For more information about all their products, check out their website: Hydro Hot Tubs. If you don’t live in this area, or country, just google search Hot Tub & Pool hire companies which deliver to your area.

    4. Film nights, inside or outside

My family loves watching movies together so we often, grab some snacks/drinks or create a, movie/TV themed meal. Then, chill out, in front of the TV. There are so many choices available on your standard TV channels or on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video My kids bought me a projector, last Christmas, and it is truly amazing! You can watch films, or TV shows, projected onto a white wall or screen, It really feels like you have your own private cinema. We are also going to try it out in the garden soon! Amazon has a great range of projectors & screens, at very reasonable prices or, if you’d prefer, you can have a company like Moonlit Events, to set up the “outdoor cinema experience” for you. They will deliver all the required equipment, set everything up and collect when it’s over. They are based in Surrey but will deliver across the UK ( For bookings outside a 12 mile radius, different rates do apply) Check out their website for more information. You can also check out Ideal Home for some more great ideas for your outdoor cinema experience or Good Housekeeping for some more ways to make have a fun “movie night” at home, with the family

    5. Enjoy World Food in, and out, of your home:

Eating the local food, of my favourite travel destinations, always brings back lovely memories and makes me feel like I am being transported back to those places! I also like to try food from places I have not yet visited but are on on my travel bucket list. There are so many amazing world food recipe books available, so whether you feel like some Mediterranean, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Thai, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Antipodean, American, Caribbean or even traditional British food, you will find something to suit your taste. There are even Disney themed cookery books -I’m sure the kid would love these! Eat around the table (in or outside) and play some music that reminds you of the holiday location. Don’t forget to pair some appropriate drinks with your food. I love combining, either red or white, Sangria with Spanish meals. Loved those days when you could share your Sangria, before Covid hit! For more great food and drink pairing ideas, check out The Flavour Principle guide book

When you are away on holiday, you can also enjoy a meal out, to a local restaurant, so why not treat yourself, whilst you’re on your staycation at home? Another option is to order a take-away or have a meal served for you, at home, by a local catering company.

    6. Take Day Trips

Plan some days out during your staycation. There are lots of options – here are just a few suggestions for places to visit. click on the links for more info:

    7. Glamping in the Garden

Whether it’s to celebrate a special occasion or just to chill out with nature, Glamping is a great idea. It’s just like camping with a but of added luxury! If you don’t already have a tent, you can hire, or buy, some luxury ones, for your garden glamping experience. There is something special about being this close to nature- hearing the birds in the morning and smelling the flowers is so calming. Added bonus- you don’t have to share your loos/bathrooms/kitchen with strangers! Add some candles, solar lights and a fire-pit for so you can enjoy relaxing outside at night.

    8. Take Virtual world tours

Even though you may not be able to travel the world, at the moment, you can still take virtual tours to some amazing places, from the comfort of your own home! Whether you’d like to explore New York, Cape Town, Niagra Falls, Istanbul, London, Sydney, Barcelona, Hawaiian Islands, The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Athens, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Las Vagas or anywhere else in the world, you can find guided tours on YouTube. You can even chose more specific tours of places such as art galleries, museums, scuba diving, railway journeys, helicopter rides, skiing, exploring the Titanic, zoos, safari and theme parks. The kids will really love the Disneyland & Disney World virtual tours & rides – actually, I did too! Some of these may bring back some great memories for you or could actually inspire you to visit places you’ve never been to, in the future!

    9. Have a Spa day at Home

Whether you’re on your own, with a friend or with your partner, Spa days are a great way to feel pampered. So, dim the lights, light some candle candles, add some fairy lights & scented oil diffusers , play some relaxing music and have some lemon & cucumber water and/or a few cocktails ready! Now put on your dressing gown/robe and you’re ready to go! Here are some ideas for creating the perfect spa experience at home:

    • Facial Treatments – Start by cleansing and or/exfoliating your skin, then begin your treatment with a facial steam. It’s great first step as it improves cell vitality and oxygen absorption through skin, for a healthier, younger looking complexion and opens and unclogs pores to allow better penetration of products. You can buy a professional style facial steamer for a very reasonable price or you can try a bit of D.I.Y. by boiling some water, pouring it into a large bowl and adding a squeeze of lemon or some essential oils, covering your head with a towel and placing your face over the steam, for up to 10 minutes (take several 1 minute breaks if your skins feels too hot) Next, apply a face mask. You could try ones for oily, dry, sensitive or for anti-aging, depending on your skin type. Relax on a bed, sofa, in a bath or hot tub, while your masks get to work. Next, remove mask before apply a moisturiser to suit your skin. Check out some more ideas Wiki tips on how to Exfoliate, Steam and Use Face Masks
    • Treat your feet: This Misiki foot spa massager relaxes your feet, promotes blood circulation with it’s oxygen bubbles, relieve stress and fatigue, improve your sleeping quality, with massage rollers and exfoliates to help remove calluses, corns and dead skin with it’s footstone. For a more frugal option, add some foot soak salts to a large bowl, or a bucket of warm water and soak your feet for 20 to 30 mins then exfoliate any callouses or dry skin with a foot exfoliator . Next, dry your feel, apply foot cream and slip on a pair of moisture retaining socks (which can be worn overnight)
    • Have a Massage: If your friend or partner is not a qualified masseur, The Shiatsu massager (see photo in gallery above) would be a great option as it provides deep tissue massages on your neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, waist, foot, tights, calves, legs, feet and arms – helping your full body parts to release stress, relieve sore muscles, and help you relax.
    • Relax in your bath : Now it’s time to chill out in your bath with a bath pillow and some bath bombs, essential oils , body wash or bath salts. or you can relax in your Hot Tub, if you have one.
    • Moisturise your body: Use your favourite body moisturiser then put on your dressing gown and relax with some herbal water, some bubbly or a nice cocktail/mocktail and a lovely meal!

    10. Take lots of photos and keep a journal of your Staycation @ home!

Make it feel like a vacation/holiday by creating memories in photos and/or videos. As so many photos taken on your phone are lost or forgotten, I thought it would be a good idea to create a journal of photos, with written descriptions, so that you and your loved ones, look back, in years to come, and be reminded of all the fun you had, even in these difficult times! Amazon has a great range of photo journals, some of which also have a storage pocket for DVDs/CDs. There is also a great range of photo journal kits, which include marker pens and other accessories, to create your personal memory book. I use my phone to take all my photos so I use either Snapfish app, and get 50 free prints a month (you only pay for the postage) or the Freeprints app, which gives you 45 free prints a month or a free canvas 8 x 8 photo tile, using any of the photos on your phone. Both apps are free to download and also offer a range of photo gifts, at very reasonable prices. Here is an example of a lovely journal, created by my sister, Sophie, for her husband, Mark’s 50th birthday:

I hope you enjoy your Staycation at home. I’m definitely going to have at least 2 of these a year from now on – 1 in summer & 1 in winter!

  • Travel

Staycations- what exactly are they and why they so popular right now?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a staycation is “a holiday that someone spends in their own country or home, rather than travelling somewhere else”

Due to varying travel guidelines, due to the coronavirus, more people are considering taking staycations, rather than vacations abroad, right now.

Like many people, I will miss my summer holidays abroad but this situation has made me appreciate how many wonderful places there are in the UK, many of which I have never visited before! I was planning a family break in San Sebastian this summer but will probably have to wait until next year now! Instead, we are now looking at staycation options. There are so many to choose from and we will probably save quite a bit of money in the process!

Now, let’s look at the various options:

    • Beach staycations
    • City breaks
    • Country breaks
    • Adventure holidays
    • Safari parks
    • Cultural/Historical breaks
    • Staycations at home

I’ll be exploring all these options in my posts, in the next week or so. I will be looking at ideal breaks for family, couples and friends. Today I will be focusing on UK Beach Holidays!

    UK Beach Staycations

There are so many amazing beaches in the UK. Whether you are into water sports, sailing, exploring, getting a culture fix, chilling on the beach, or indulging in delicious food and drink, you will find something to suit you!

The Beach is my happy place

If you are into watersports, such as surfing, sea kayaking, kite surfing, body boarding & sailing, you’ll find plenty of opportunites, as recommended by The National Trust & Countryfile. ( You can still chill on the beaches here, by the way!)

    Devon & Cornwall:

Combesgate, Croyde and Woolacombe beaches, in North Devon are great for surfing, whether you are an experienced surfer or keen to try it out for the first time. Gwithian Beach, Cornwall is one of the best spots for kite surfing and the swells from the Atlanic are good for flat water sailing. Watergate Bay and Poldhu Cove, in Cornwall is very popular with surfers. Poldhu Cove has a small, family-friendly , surf school, run by Dan Joel, a former professional surfer who works in partnership with the National Trust: Dan Joel Surf School or check out this surf school that caters for beginners to experts Croyde: Full or Half-Day Surf Lesson

Other things to see and do in the area:

There is a great range of restaurants and bars here too. We had a family holiday in Braunton, North Devon, a few years ago and discovered some great places there, including, the lovely Heanton Court Vintage Inn, in Barnstable. It, originally, was an ancient manor house for distinguished families, descended from King Edward IV. It’s now a family friendly Pub, serving a wide selection of food, ales, beers wines and soft drinks from 11am till late, everyday. It’s a beautiful, historic building, with stunning view over the estuary and Tarka Trail

We also visited Ilfracome Harbour, while we were in North Devon. It’s the largest harbour on the North Devon coast and has been in existence, as a port, for several centuries. You can park and leave your car, then walk around, exploring the area. There is so much to do here including coastal cruises, fishing, sea-life safaris and diving or you can just explore the Quay and the surrounding streets. Here you’ll restaurants, cafes, tea gardens and pubs, many with outside seating. We found the lovely Curiosity Cottage Tea rooms, a family run cafe with a good choice of meals and homemade afternoon tea.

There are also lots of small shops, art galleries and general stores. Wandering round, you can’t miss Damien Hirst’s 66 foot stainless steel and bronze sculpture named Verity depicts a pregnant woman with layers of skin and flesh removed from one side to expose a fœtus, muscle layers and a skull underneath. On Hirst’s website it says: “Verity stands on a base of scattered legal books and holds the traditional symbols of Justice – a sword and scales”. It’s on loan to Ilfracombe for 20 years (since 2012) Locals & tourists have mixed feelings about the statue – some love it and some hate it – you can decide for yourself , when you see it!

You can check out more restaurants, bars and cafes, in Devon here on Trip Advisor and 15 of the best restaurants in Cornwall, as recommended by Conde Nast Travel You can find lots of attraction and fun things to do here in both North Devon and Cornwall

Did you know that Cornwall is a popular location with TV/Film companies and has been used in some, seriously famous. films or TV shows? Here are some of the most popular filming locations:

    • Charlestown –   The films Pirates of the Caribbean and Apocalypto were filmed here, along with the hit TV series, Poldark
    • Port Isaac – This quaint village was used for the filming of the Doc Martin TV series
    • Holywell Bay -The lovely beach here was also used for Poldark. The James Bond movie, Die another Day, starring Piers Brosnan, was also filmed here

The menu offers a wide choice of seafood and fish dishes as well as the pub classics you know you love! We had a great meal here before a stroll along the beach.

    The Dorset Coast

The stunning Dorset coastline, in the South of England, is 142 kilometres (88 mi) long ( excluding the shoreline of Pool Harbour) running from Lyme Regis, in the west, to Highcliffe, in the east. There are SO many beautiful places to explore, and things to do here, many of which are on my “bucket list” including visiting Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove!

Check out some ideas for things to do in Dorset

I often visit friends who live along the Dorset coast so I’ll be focusing these areas today: Sandbanks, Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Mudeford Quay. They are all quite close to each other so wherever you choose to stay, you could easily have a day trip to the others! See the video above for some more Dorset ideas.

Sandbanks Beach runs along a small peninsula between Poole and Bournemouth.

With it’s breathtaking views and soft golden sand, this Blue Flag beach is recognised as one of the best in the UK. It’s seaside properties are some of the most expensive, in the world – it’s often referred to as Britain’s Palm Beach! It’s clean, generally calm, waters are perfect for families or, for just chilling by the sea! Parasols, deck chairs and sports equipment such as volleyball & table tennis kits, are available from the beach front office. If you want to try some watersports, you should check out the Watersports Academy which has a wide range activities to suit all ages, skills, accompanied with fun qualified instructor. It has direct access to Poole Harbour’s sheltered and waist-deep water. The harbour, is the world’s second largest natural harbour in Dorset and is home to several marinas and yacht clubs.

    Food and Drink:

With delicious seafood and lovely views across Poole harbour, Rick Stein restaurant is perfect for a relaxed get-together with family & friends or for a romantic dinner for two. They have a 3 course Set Lunch menu for £27pp Check out their main menu for more choices, including a steak & veggie option. For something a little less formal, the Sandbanks Beach Cafe is a popular choice. It’s modern and spacious cafe, serving a great variety of dishes such as moules frites, goats’ cheese tarts, antipasto & seafood sharing boards as well as burgers, paninis and cooked breakfasts or you can just enjoy a drink and the gorgeous sea view. It’s a family friendly cafe, with a kiddie’s play area & meals including “bucket and spade” lunches that they can enjoy on the beach!

Other things to see and do:

For a fun day out with family and friends, Sandbanks Crazy Golf is a good option It’s located right next to the main car park on the Sandbanks peninsula, next to the children’s play area, and near the Sandbanks Beach Cafe. On a Poole Harbour & Islands Circular Cruise, you can take in fantastic views from the open deck as you pass picturesque Brownsea Island, Sandbanks Peninsula, Studland Bay and more.  Tickets are from £12.50 for adults , £7.50 for kids (5-16) & free for children under 4. A fun annual event, I attended with friends, a few years ago, was the Sandbanks beach party. Sadly, the event had to be cancelled this year, due to coronavirus but tickets for July 2021 are now on sale. The gates open to all ticket-holders from 1pm to enjoy an afternoon of Sandpolo (polo on the beach!) Spectators can get close to the action and fully appreciate the gladiatorial nature of polo! The afternoon also features a Beach Rugby exhibition, a charity pony race, a fashion show, and the chance to spot the odd celebrity guest! Then, as the sun begins to set, ‘Boogie on the Beach begins at 7pm & finishes @1am. Guests will enjoy a great line up of international Soul, Motown & Disco acts, performing live on stage in the main marquee. Full details can be found on their website

    Where stay:

My sister highly recommends the Sandbanks Hotel Step off it’s lovely terrace, straight onto the beach, with seven miles of golden sand! The perfect holiday destination for watersports, family fun or just relaxing by the sea. The hotel has 3 restaurants, The Sea View & The Amalfi Beach, which are only available to hotel guests The Pizza on the Beach (located on their) beach terrace) which also offers take-away service for non-residents. Another stunning place to stay is the Hotel Du Vin. Poole’s centre and Dolphin Shopping Centre is only 15 minutes’ walk away, whilst Poole Park and Boating Lake is 20 minutes away on foot. Poole’s beaches can be reached within a 10-minute walk. The French bistro serves locally sourced food and the bar has an extensive wine list. Couples, particularly, highly rate this hotel for it’s romantic ambience! If you are looking for self catering accommodation for up to 8 people, 1 Seascapes is a good option. This attractive, stylish, modern, four-bedroom townhouse is located on the Sandbanks Peninsular and provides fabulous family holiday accommodation, close to the beaches with off-road parking for 2 cars

For more ideas for places to stay, check out the Poole Tourism Guide

    Bournemouth

There are so many things to see and do in this lovely coastal town and on it’s 7 miles of sandy coastline. Bournemouth Pier is situated on the beach, right next to the city centre. Other beaches include Durley Chine, Alum Chine. Boscombe and Southbourne. Here is the Bournemouth Guide for some great ideas

    Food and Drink:

I had a couple of nice meals, on a day trip to Bournemouth Beach, The Westbeach seafood restaurant & beach bar, just metres from the beach & Bournemouth Pier. It’s one recommend as a “local gem” in Bournemouth, according to the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2019 and It’s earned itself great reviews from critics such as AA Gill. You can sit inside or on the terrace. The other lovely one was Vesuvio Italian restaurant, located on Alum Chine beach, with idyllic views from Old Harry Rocks to the Isle of Wight. Again, you can eat inside, or on the beach terrace. They also have a playground, at the back, for the kids.

Other things to see and do:

The Oceanarium, is located next to Bournemouth Pier, on the beach front, just a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Have a magical underwater journey and discover 1000’s of amazing creatures above and below the waves- great fun for all the family. Explore the in the Oceanarium in the video below:

Check out the watersports, walking & hiking, entertainment & shopping! There also advice on a variety of places to stay while you’re here.

    Christchurch & Mudeford Quay

Christchurch adjoins Bournemouth in the west and the New Forest lies to the east. The town’s harbour, beaches, nature reserves and historically important buildings have made Christchurch a popular tourist destination. The town centre lies between the rivers Avon and Stour which flow directly into Christchurch Harbour. The harbour is a protected wildlife refuge and is home to large populations of swans, waders and other bird life. Mudeford is a former fishing village at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour in Dorset. Mudeford Quay is situated at the entrance to Christchurch harbour, it’s is the departure point for ferries to Mudeford Sandbank  On most days. from the beach here, you can see the Isle of Wight and Needles across the Christchurch Bay.

Food, Drink and Things to do:

The Jetty restaurant, at the Harbour Hotel, in Mudeford, is a multi-award-winning restaurant, perched right on the water’s edge and with spectacular views across the harbour. It specialises in locally-caught seafood paired with seasonal ingredients from the surrounding New Forest. We celebrated a friend’s birthday here and the food, drinks and service were great! I also love The Boathouse, in Christchurch. It has lovely, panoramic views of the quay and you can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner, alfresco or indoors. If you fancy a bit of crazy golf, you can play on their course and grab a nice take-away instead! The Thomas Tripp, in Christchurch town centre, is a fun pub & music venue, with tasty food. It was named after the a legendary local smuggler, who was a hero in the 17th century, as smuggling was an honourable tradition, in the area, in those days! We went to a fancy dress. Pirate Party they held there, last year and it was great fun. Hopefully, they will be able to have another one next year! They also, regularly, have quiz nights and great music, from local musicians- definitely worth a visit, or two!

    Brighton

Brighton- It’s a colourful, vibrant, cosmospolitan, creative place. Which is probably why many writers, musicians, artists and ‘foodies’ are attracted to this area! According to the Visit Brighton guide, it is “Often voted the happiest place in the UK, the city offers a fantastic mix of Regency heritage, fabulous shopping, funky arts and music, beachfront cool and year round festivals and events” I do love Brighton. The beach is pebbly so be careful, if you are walking barefoot, whilst you’re here!

    Food an Drink:

Some of my favourite places to eat in Brighton are Polpo, Bistro@Hotel du Vin and Terre à Terre. Polpo is a bacaro – a Venetian word to describe a back-street wine bar that serves small plates of delicious seafood, meaty snacks and simple delicacies from the Veneto region of northern Italy- great if, like me, you love small portions with lots of different flavours! It has an authentic, Venetian feel. The Bistro@Hotel du Vin has a nice French vibe about it. They serve classic French & modern British food and their Sommelier can recommend the perfect wine to pair a particular dish, if you need some advice. Terre à Terre, in the Lanes, may be a vegetarian restaurant, but everyone I’ve been there with (even the hardcore carnivores) love this place! The flavours of the food are delicious. The late food critic,  AA Gill reviewed the restaurant, saying that Terre a Terre “probably the best vegetarian restaurant in Britain” and he was very sceptical at first as he was definitely not a veggie! Things to see and do:

The Brighton Royal Pavilion was built as a seaside pleasure palace for King George IV, this historic house mixes Regency grandeur with the visual style of India and China, it’s a must-see! The can check out the lavish interiors & gardens of the estate. You can book tickets on the Brighton Museums website. For a bit of family fun, on the beach, check out the Brighton Palace Pier. It offers, attractions, rides, entertainment an restaurants, for the whole family. You can check it out here: Brighton Palace Pier For something a bit different, The Lanes in Brighton are full of vintage gear, antiques and jewellery – an eclectic mix, all brought together around a historic network of narrow city streets. Great for shopping or just exploring, the area is full of character and plenty of independent cafes to unwind in. Here’s are some guides for shopping and food & drink in The Lanes. For more things to see and do in Brighton, including guided tours, check out Get your Guide’s list which includes a visit to the British Airways i360 observation tower where you enjoy a smooth ride up 138 meters in a futuristic glass viewing pod and take in panoramic views of Brighton and the South Coast.

Want some great packing tips for, stress free, holidays?

    “Yes please!”

With Coronavirus lockdown being eased, we can, hopefully, look forward to travelling again soon! I thought it would be a good time to share some useful tips on packing for your break

For many people, knowing what to pack, to look good and feel relaxed, whilst travelling, is a huge dilemma so they end up taking everything but the kitchen sink “just in case” they need it!

Below you will find tips on packing to look and feel great whilst staying well within your baggage allowance

    1.Avoid Pure Cotton

Unless you don’t mind ironing whilst you’re away! Cotton wrinkles rapidly and it is probably one of the most difficult fabrics to pack when traveling. Instead, look for clothing that is either supposed to be wrinkled, such as linen, or which is wrinkle-resistant. There are several brands of clothing which are specially designed not to need ironing and these work very well for travel.

    2.Roll Your Clothes

A good way to pack your clothing is to roll it, rather than fold it. As well as minimising creases, you can make use of every inch of available space e.g. gaps between shoes, bags and hairbrushes etc.  If you roll the more delicate items, with a thin towel or washcloth in them, it will help smooth them out even more.

3.Choose A Capsule Wardrobe and Colour Palette

Pick two main colours, that go together, for your wardrobe, plus two or three accent colours. At least one of your two main colours should be neutrals: black, white, brown, tan, or navy. All your main pieces of clothing e.g. skirts, trousers or shorts, should be one of the two main colors. Smaller items like t-shirts, vests, scarves and belts can be in brighter accent colors.

I love taking dresses as can be any colour/pattern, as long as you have shoes in neutral colours (See tip 5 below). Maxis & midi dresses are great as they are a bang on trend and can be worn casually during the day or dressed up with accessories at night.  This means that all the clothing in your suitcase can be mixed and matched to look great

I bought this dress on Amazon – I love it and it was a bargain!

Take 2 lots of swimwear so they have time to dry out between swims!

    Men’s Hugo Boss Swim shorts
    Men’s Sports Swimwear

A lightweight beachwear cover up, or two, is a must

    Crochet Beach Cover up

Don’t forget to take a lightweight jacket, or two, as it may be a bit cooler at night. Denim, black or white are great neutral colours

    Denim Jacket

    4.Pack Lots Of Accessories

Earrings, necklaces and belts take up very little room, yet can change your look in just seconds.

A pair of dangly earrings will dress up a basic blouse for daytime whilst a set of pearl earrings and choker turn that same blouse into the perfect evening wear. You can pack them in a compact jewellery organiser

Bring a couple of different belts and scarves/wraps as well, since these can drastically change how an outfit looks.

A couple of hats would be useful. If they are not foldable, you can put one inside the other and then fill the middle with small items such as, underwear or jewellery. Sunglasses should be packed in your hand luggage so that they are readily available as soon as you step off the plane.

    Men’s Panama Hat

5.Stick To Three Pairs of Shoes

A pair of comfortable shoes such as trainers or flip flops, are essential if you plan on doing any walking or sightseeing.   Stylish but comfortable, wedge shoes are ideal for a dressier occasion such as dinner out with friends or family and, if you are near the beach or plan to enjoy some warm weather, flat sandals can look nice and still let your feet breathe. There really should be no need for more pairs of shoes and if you go with the neutral colours, in your colour palette (see tip 3. above) the three pairs that you bring will match anything in your travel wardrobe. Metallic silver, gold or bronze shoes are also great as they go with any other colours.

    6.Consider Gravity When Packing

Pack heavier items such as shoes, near the bottom and use beach towels or sarongs to create layers and sections in the case so that you can find something in a hurry.  Fill the shoes with socks, underwear and accessories to make the best use of available space. *Remember, if you are using a wheelie case, that will be upright a lot of the time, the heaviest items should be near the wheel end to prevent the case from toppling over*

    7. Pack For The Time Of Day That You Arrive

If you are due to arrive at your destination in the middle of the night, you may want your nightwear and toiletries are at the top of the case. If, on the other hand, you are due to arrive early in the day and want a dip in the pool before you can check into your room, keep your beach towel, sun cream and swimwear within easy reach. Microfibre beachtowels are great for holidays as they are super lightweight yet absorbant!

    Kids/Adults Microfibre Beach Towels

    8. Always choose lightweight luggage

This will enable you to put more items in your suitcase and still be within the baggage limits. It will also be so much easier to carry, or pull, around the airport and to lift into overhead lockers on the plane!

    9.Downsize Your Toiletries

Carrying miniature sized toiletries will save on space. If you can’t find travel sized versions of your favourite products, you can just decant them into plastic containers, made for the purpose. (Readily available from most pharmacies and supermarkets or on-line stores ) Don’t forget to place containers of liquid in a protective bag in case they leak in transit.

10.Take A Folding Bag (or two!)

These fold away neatly, taking up very little space in your case and can be used as a beach or excursion bag during your break. They are also handy to use on the way home, for duty free shopping!  Choose a neutral colour that will go with all your clothes.

    Canvas Tote Bag

    11. Be Sensible With Security

It’s a good idea to have two identity luggage tags.  One should be on the inside in case the outside label is ripped off.  This will ensure that if your case goes missing, it will always find its way back to you. Use the name of the hotel where you are staying and your mobile number rather than your home address and telephone number.  If you are taking valuables with you, it’s always best to keep them in your hand luggage rather than pack them in the suitcase.

Plan your travel wardrobe ahead of time. Try on everything before you pack it and be sure to only include clothes that fit well and that you find comfortable. Looking great is far easier when you are comfortable with yourself and your clothes. Follow these tips before your next trip and you will be sure to look great and feel great too!

    Have a wonderful, relaxing trip!

    In and Around Melbourne Australia

I recently spent a month in Melbourne, visiting family and friends. I was fortunate to have made it back to Blighty just before Lockdown!

We may not be able to travel right now but it’s good to think about future breaks as it gives us something to look forward to!

Melbourne is considered to be one of the most liveable cities in the world. It has a laid back, cosmopolitan vibe and has something for everyone:

Get your guide to Melbourne some more fun places to visit/things to do here

    The City Centre

    The Southbank

The Southbank is considered to be Melbourne’s premier cultural destination. Take a lovely walk along the Yarra river and enjoy it’s many cafes, restaurants and shopping areas. If art is your thing, check out the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). Gallery entry is FREE. For some amazing street art, check out Hosier Lane. You can explore the lane for free or, to find out more about the artists and their work, you take a walking tour. Check out Tripadvisor for more details

The Crown Casino Complex is not just a place for gamers – it actually has something for everyone! It also offers fine dining @ 29 restaurants, luxury shops such as Hugo Boss Burrbery & Louis Vuitton, entertainment, a cinema, spa, bowling, a playtime arcade and luxury accomodation @ the Crown Towers Hotel, which is, apparently, it’s a popular place to stay for celebrities visiting Melbourne. I found it fascinating to walk around the complex as the interiors are stunning!
